Der Arthousefilm mit Horrorelementen spielt mit Themen wie Terrorismus und Bewustseinskontrolle, und ist teilweise von den gängigen Verschwörungstheorien inspiriert. In den Hauptrollen sehen wir Clayton Nemrow und Eva Dorrepaal, zusammen mit Sebastian Suba, Simon Werner, Valerie Renay, The Horrorist und vielen anderen. Den Soundtrack komponierte The House of Destructo. Der Film feierte bereits seine offizielle Premiere auf dem niederländischen Filmfestival im September 2010.

This unique arthouse horror film deals with topics such as terrorism and mind control, and is partly inspired by conspiracy theories. Clayton Nemrow and Eva Dorrepaal play leading roles, next to Sebastian Suba, Simon Werner, Valerie Renay, The Horrorist and many others. The attendant songs were taken of The House Of Destructo’s second album “Everything Must Be Destroyed”. The film had its official premiere during the 2010 Dutch Film Festival.

'Revision' to premiere next month in Berlin

'Revision - Apocalypse II' is going to celebrate its Berlin premiere on Thursday, February 23rd. The film will be shown to a German audience for the very first time.

Edwin Brienen's 'Revision' is paranoid, disturbing, hysterical - it's arthouse extravaganza 'pur sang', dealing with topics such as mind control, globalization and New World Order. The film succesfully premiered at the Dutch Film Festival in 2010, and was released on DVD by Filmfreak Distribution, May last year.

Starting Febnruary, 23rd, the film will be shown daily at 10 P.M. at Brotfabrik Kino in Berlin.

First of all, let’s rock 2012 ! We’re in the middle of post-production for a new feature film “Exploitation”, expected release April/May.

Eva (played by Eva Dorrepaal) has been called in for an audition. The atmosphere is kind of intimidating: the (masked) director (played by Tomas Spencer) dominates and humiliates Eva, forces her into prostitution to raise money for an upcoming film project. Once Eva’s individuality and emotions have been eliminated, we get into a shady world of occultists and devil worshippers.

Here, “Exploitation” uses the so-called ‘mise en abyme’ principle and shows a fictitious film in the film, called “Apocalypse, Part 3”: a breathtaking ‘Abendland’ of dreamy pictures (Eva in white doctor’s coat, almost disappearing in the white snow landscapes of Polish’ Krakow) and nightmarish visions. It’s all there: baphomets, paganism, bizarre costumes. Especially some old-time obsessions of mine are highly celebrated here: the esthetics of Death in June, the works of painter Alfred Böcklin, or Aleister Crowley’s Thelema spirituality.

Exploitation, 2012. Starring Eva Dorrepaal, Sebastian Suba, Tomas Spencer, Jaron Löwenberg, Anna Fin, Edwin Brienen, Noblesse Oblige and many others. Dutch electro label Enfant Terrible is going to release a soundtrack of the film on double LP, featuring artists such as SaraLunden, Europ Europ and Oplen. Now is that something to look forward to!

„Satan bedeutet Sinnesfreude statt Abstinenz“ - sagt die „Satanische Bibel“. Autor dieses Werks ist der Gründer der „Church of Satan“, Anton Szandor LaVey. Angeblich geschrieben im Rausch der Walpurgisnacht 1966, wollte LaVey mit diesem Buch die absolute persönliche Freiheit propagieren. Bis heute folgen weltweit Anhänger seinen Thesen, existiert die „Church of Satan“ weiter, auch in Deutschland.

Für viele Menschen war LaVey der gefährlichste Mann der Welt, für andere nur ein Scharlatan. Viel Handfestes ist über ihn nicht bekannt, da er ein Meister darin war, sich mit Legenden und Halbwahrheiten zu umgeben. „Als der Satan laufen lernte“ führt von der Gründung der „Church of Satan“ über Stationen in LaVeys Leben bis zum modernen Satanismus des neuen Jahrtausends. Edwin Brienen, geboren 1971 in Alkmaar/Niederlande, war Radiomoderator beim niederländischen Radio VPRO und Moderator der TV-Show „Ultra Vista!“. Im Jahr 2000 drehte er seinen Debütfilm „Terrorama!“ und arbeitet seitdem erfolgreich als Filmregisseur. „Als der Satan laufen lernte“ ist sein erstes Hörspiel.

REVISION: APOCALYPSE 2

Wanstaltig, geniaal of allebei? Murw gebeukt door de liters bloed die over het bioscoopscherm spuien, overkomt het me nog maar zelden. Maar Edwin Brienens waanzinnig psychotische revision: apocalypse 2 bevatte eindelijk weer een scène die me deed kokhalzen.

Het lichaam van een overspelige burgerman wordt operatief aan stukken gereten. Het begint met diepe messneden in hals en gezicht, vervolgens wordt er tergend traag een been afgezaagd. Om te culmineren in het met een heggenschaar openknippen van de buik en het één voor één lospeuteren van de organen. In een flits zien we hoe de kat zich te goed doet aan een stukje darm.
Dat is typisch Brienen, om zo'n gruwelijke martelscène zonder pardon te laten overlopen in een haast melige grap. Misplaatst? Wanstaltig? Of is het grensoverschrijdend? En simpelweg geniaal? Eigenlijk klopt het allemaal een beetje, want revision is Kult met een grote K. Zo buitenissig en zwaar over-the-top dat elke kwalificatie eigenlijk meteen de tegenovergestelde kwalificatie oproept. Brienen behoort daarmee tot een select groepje regisseurs: je kunt hem tegelijkertijd haten en van hem houden.

Naaktmodel
Werkelijk alles kan en alles mag in zijn dolgedraaide universum, waarop niet alleen de toeschouwer, maar ook de inhabitanten hun grip verliezen. Het aan lager wal geraakte naaktmodel Traci mijmert voor zichzelf uit over haar structurele identiteitscrisis en de peilloze diepte van haar bestaan. Wat Traci rest, is een orgie van verkrachting, marteling en moord. Dat gebeurt tegen de achtergrond van een door de massacultuur en -consumptie gecorrumpeerde samenleving, die niet anders kan dan haar eigen ondergang bewerkstelligen.
Als psychothriller à la black swan weet revision niet helemaal te overtuigen. Daarvoor word je onvoldoende meegesleept in Traci's zieke geest. Hetzelfde geldt voor de potentieel subversieve maatschappijkritiek die Brienen levert. Maar misschien is het beter om de film niet al te serieus te nemen. Laat staan om hem te labelen. Brienen overtreedt niet alleen de grenzen van de goede smaak, hij laat zich ook niet in een hokje proppen. Voor arthouse mist revision de verfijnde esthetiek, voor een ordinaire genrefilm de publieksbehaagzucht, voor een avant-gardistisch experiment het verheven intellectualisme. Het is niets van dat alles en toch ook weer allemaal wel.

My dear friend Zbigniew Czauz died today at age 36. Heart infection. We met during the filming of Lebenspornografie in 2002 - Zbyszek, as I always called him, played the role of Jim's lover in that particular film. We became friends and stayed friends. Beginning of this year Zbigniew appeared in Lena. We saw each other last month at the Volksbühne premiere for the last time. And now he's dead. Damn it, Zbyszek!

And we did it again. I’m very excited to announce my new film Lena will es endlich wissen, which is scheduled for world premiere at the Berlin Volksbühne, Wednesday, 9th March, 20.00 hrs.

My (Brienen’s) regular troupe (Agnieszka Rozenbajgier, Godehard Giese, Bärbel Schleker, Clayton Nemrow) meets with new faces such as Stella Maria Adorf, Tim Sander, Vivien LaFleur and Peter Kurth. I always wanted to make a seventies-styled satire, which easily mixes the kitsch and sweetness of ABBA videos and Farrah Fawcett haircuts, with political social comments on society. Viva Europa! star Ms Rozenbajgier did an excellent job playing the confused, love-searching Lena, André Götzmann was responsible for some stunning, seventies-esque cinematography, makep-artist and hair stylist Maike Oberhoffer gave our actors the right, sophisticated look. Written for the screen by Marc Baumgarten and myself, I’m excited to see the film on the big screen in less than three weeks from now. A trailer will be online in a few days. Hope to see you all at the Berlin Volksbühne on the 9th of March.

Warum Ulli sich am Weihnachtsabend umbringen wollte verdient vielleicht die Bezeichnung ‚schnellster gedrehter Film’.

Im November 2005 hatte Edwin Brienen den wilden Plan, in kürzester Zeit einen kompletten Spielfilm zu produzieren (Dreh, Schnitt und Postproduktion). Der Film feierte im Dezember 2005 seine Premiere in diversen Kinos in acht deutschen Städten und bekam gute Kritiken in der Presse. Jetzt, im Jahre 2010 erscheint die neue Schnittfassung des Films, welche am 23. Dezember um 18:00 Uhr im Lichtblick Kino seine Wiederaufführung feiert. Der Regisseur wird anwesend sein.

Ulli ist eine einsame Seele und startet eine verzweifelte Suche nach Gesellschaft. Aber wen er auch fragt, seinen besten Freund, seine Schwester und selbst seine Mutter, keiner hat Zeit für ihn. Für Ulli beginnt eine dreitägige Suche voller Zurückweisung und Demütigung. In einem Akt der Verzweiflung beschließt er ein Mädchen, dass er auf der Strasse trifft, zu entführen, um sie somit zu zwingen den Weihnachtsabend mit ihm zu verbringen...

Neben seinen Stammschauspielern, wie Esther Eva Verkaaik und Eva Dorrepaal, arbeitete Edwin Brienen für diesen Film zum ersten Mal mit den Berliner Schauspielern Marin Caktas, Laura Tonke, Ades Zabel und Hendrik Arnst zusammen.

A cruel, cynical fairytale, set 20 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, about a former circus clown from the GDR and a Polish prostitute. The film had its premiere at the Berlin Volksbühne, November last year.

Re:vision - Apocalypse II by Edwin Brienen

New film by Dutch independent filmmaker Edwin Brienen. As always with Brienen films this film is made with about no budget. It shows but it also means it has charm. Also it is the style of Brienen. At the first screening he complained about the VHS quality due to the equipment at the theatre, but I liked it that the film had this lo-fi and real low budget flair.

Anyway the film is about the end… that is why the subtitle is Apocalypse… the two is there as it not only about the Biblical end… the film is telling the story on two levels. One a contemporary political Armageddon (this is the two I guess), the other is the traditional one as we know from the Book Of Revelations. The political one is displayed in the realistic and raw style of Brienen. You know the dril… sex and violence as it dominates our daily lives… brought to life through the persons in the film.

For the Biblical part Brienen has choosen a more surrealistic way of telling the story. You get shots in between the regular scenes of a magician, a singing bartender and some ultra lo-fi black and white big pixel shots like dream sequences.
In general I like the film but the surrealistic part was very Lynch like feeling for me. On the other hand the realistic part had some dialogues I did not like… it was a bit too easy for my… I mean we all know about the New World Order, George W. Bush and 9-11 about now… the theme could have been dealt with in a less obvious way.

Still the way of telling the story I liked a lot. The fragmented story line, the mood and feeling and truly outstanding is the editing on the music. You can see Brienen has been doing videoclips too. Vincent Koreman (RA-X, Travoltas and Speedboat FC to just name a few of his projects) is responsible for most of the music. In this case with his trash metal project The House Of Destructo. Due to fact that the songs throughout the film are mostly sung by the bartender (also the devil?) you can also watch Revision – Apocalypse II as a musical.

And, from this point of view the film is the most successful and interesting. The surrealism is most effective if these song sequences are seen as the main storyline. Next to that I would consider the film the most original if seen as a trash metal musical on the end of the world theme. Much more original then as I would consider this film a normal feature film. Style and content make the most sense from the musical perspective.

The film is screened at the Dutch Film Festival In Utrecht (september 2010) for the first time. It should be out on DVD later...

Revision – Apocalypse II, the latest film from Edwin Brienen, enjoys its world premiere during the 30^th edition Netherlands Film Festival in Utrecht.

The film, starring Eva Dorrepaal, Clayton Nemrow and Jacob Dove Basker, is set in a futuristic world where terrorist attacks rule daily life, forced chip implantation is commonplace and government control is routinely exerted through manipulation of the media.

Traci (Eva Dorrepaal), a former model, feels lost and confused. Whereas she once believed in God, she now tries desperately to fill the void caused by her lack of faith. Her husband, Charlie (Clayton Nemrow), persuades her to surrender to the ultimate act of evil. Soon, however, reality and fantasy become intertwined in an indecipherable web of hallucination and mental chaos. Haunted by her own inner demon, Vince Destructo (Jacob Dove Basker), Traci spirals headlong toward madness. The demon, Destructo, appears to Tracy predominantly in musical form. The accompanying songs were taken of The House Of Destructo’s second album Everything Must Be Destroyed, a musical project from Vincent Koreman who also provided the additional score.

Demonic possesion? Check. Gratuitous violence? Check. Pointless nudity? Double check. Still, despite the lavish application of beloved horror clichés, Revision - Apocalypse II simply defies categorization. Writer/producer/director Edwin Brienen feels comfortably at home on the avant-garde fringe as he intermingles blood spatters with dislocating camera angles and philosophical pontification. In a godless society, where globalism and terrorism fuel one another, former model, Traci (Eva Dorrepaal, a Brienen stalwart who functions here also as co-producer) steadily loses her grip on reality. Her husband convinces her that the spiritual emptiness she feels can be alleviated by committing a murder. Traci’s psychological Hell is pregnant with meaning and symbolism: a copulating Christ being the blasphemous highpoint. Unsuspecting viewers may be persuaded that Judgment Day is at hand when they see Traci’s inner demon, Vince Destructo (Jacob Dove Basker) perform the trash-punk-metal music of Vincent Koreman in several vignettes.

A brand new Noblesse Oblige album will hit stores at the end of May. It is called Malady. Edwin has worked with Valerie and Sebastian on their Quel genre de garçon video and his film L’Amour Toujours. In the video for The Great Electrifier, the first single from Malady, Edwin created a devilish, visual playground. Inspired by Alfred Böcklin or even Aleister Crowley, the video flirts with occultism in an art-aesthetic way that resembles the works of Maya Deren or Kenneth Anger, mixed with a touch of Dark Shadows kitsch. Camera work is by Matthias Tschiedel, and filming was in the Berlin Spreepark and the Old Mausoleum House in Potsdam.

Strange Life Records found one of Edwin’s early radio shows for VPRO Broadcasting Association, back in 1993.

“I’ve found this cassette with a recording from the early 90s where the legendary illustrious Edwin Brienen interviews “The Hague Underground founders” Guy Tavares and I.F on the national state radio. This was when the dutch state radio VPRO did really good stuff on prime time friday evening radio. Edwin Brienen is a one-off independent film maker who has often been called ‘The Dutch Fassbinder’. Born in The Netherlands Edwin has made 14 films, many stage plays and has shot music videos. He’s lived in New York and is currently living in a pleasant area of Berlin. After studying philosophy and psychology Edwin started his career as a radio host on Dutch Radio Association VPRO. In an interview for Maulbeerblatt, Edwin talked about his films, his past and future.
